Jenny & Keith | Methuen Memorial Music Hall & Andover Country Club Wedding

Jenny and Keith were married in a beautiful ceremony at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, which has this magnificent organ that spans the wall of the altar. It literally takes your breath away when you first see it–so grand in comparison to the modest hall space! Following the ceremony was their reception at the Andover Country Club, which has this lush garden area right outside, giving us a fantastic backdrop for portraits. Add to that the lively guests and the gorgeous weather, and overall it was a perfect day!

One of the fun parts of the night was the Paebaek, or Korean wedding ceremony, that they held during the reception. This involved Jenny and Keith adorning traditional ceremonial attire, bowing and serving honorary family members tea as a show of their respect, and receiving well wishes from the honorees. After the well wishes, the family members threw dates and chestnuts which Jenny and Keith had to catch–the dates and chestnuts symbolizing the number of girls and boys they’ll bear in the future. Lastly, Keith carried Jenny (on his back!) as they exited, and I later learned that this is to display the groom’s strength to the bride’s family. It was my first time witnessing a Paebaek, so it was such a fun and colorful experience to capture.

The day ran smoothly due to some fabulous vendors, including flowers by The Tangled Web, event coordination by Pink Orchid Weddings, and music by Beat Train Productions!

Alicia & Jose | Charles River and MIT engagement

Alicia and Jose and I met up on the Esplanade for their engagement shoot a few weeks ago. We had a great time exploring some spots along the Boston side of the river and then moved our way to the Cambridge side to get some captures at MIT, Alicia’s alma mater. The fun thing I learned about Alicia and Jose is they are avid salsa dancers, and even met and started dating while taking the same salsa class that I took at MIT a few years ago. I love that the way they feel about each other is so evident in the photos below. These two are so natural–together, and in front of the camera! I’m so excited to see these two again later this month, and to hopefully catch a few salsa moves at the wedding. :)

Rich & Brian | Boston engagement

Rich and Brian will be getting married just next week, but we met up in February for some shots of the two of them out in Boston together. We started off at the ICA and walked our way along the water over to the Moakley Courthouse and bridge. My favorite part about this area of the city is that there are so many lines in the architecture of both the museum and courthouse, and especially the bridge, making for very interesting backdrops. I absolutely loved working with Rich and Brian–the session was full of laughs, and I know the wedding day will be even more joyful. I can’t wait to see these two again very soon at the Fairmont Battery Wharf!

Angie & Ilvick | Boston engagement

Angie and Ilvick met in Haiti and are getting married in Jamaica, but in the meantime they wanted some shots of them together in their current city of Boston. We had a great time exploring the wharf area one cloudy day in February. Don’t you just love Angie’s gorgeous red coat (a gift from Ilvick)??

Thao & Phu | Boston Esplanade engagement

Thao and Phu and I had a lovely time on the Esplanade last month for this engagement session. It was just the time of day where you can work with the light in so many different ways. It was so pretty that looking back on the images it is hard to believe that we were working with below freezing temperatures and had to use handwarmers to get us through breaks during the session! Thao and Phu were troopers though, and I think their warmth towards each other really shined through during our time together and now in these photos.

The beautiful thing about Thao and Phu is that they’ve been together for over 10 years, and they’ll be getting married this summer on their 11th (yes, eleventh!!) dating anniversary! So much to celebrate! I can’t wait to see them again in just a few months for their ceremony at the W Hotel in Boston.

Meghan & Mike | Commandant’s House Wedding

Meghan and Mike were married on a gorgeous October afternoon on the lawn of the Commandant’s House in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Throughout the day, I was constantly reminded of why I love photographing weddings. What I loved most about this particular day was that they kept things simple, letting the venue speak for itself, and instead focused on what was most important to them: each other, and all of the family and friends who were there to share in their day. The guests responded by showing just how important Meghan and Mike were to them too–by their elated cheers after they kissed during the ceremony, their heartfelt and funny toasts, and their willingness to rock it out on the dance floor. All in all, making this the perfect way to end my 2011 wedding season. :)

Leela & Dave | Boston engagement

This is another fall engagement session that is making me miss the colorful Boston leaves! Leela and Dave chose to do the session in and around their neighborhood, which meant we got to walk through the Back Bay and around the Christian Science Center looking for some great shots and working with the light. We had a great time, and I think Leela and Dave enjoyed that the slightly chilly weather gave them an excuse to be close! I’m looking forward to seeing these two again for their wedding at the Museum of Science this fall.

Fun tidbit: one image we used as inspiration during the shoot was Bob Dylan’s Freewheelin’ album cover image, which Leela and Dave love . This is a seemingly easy shot to recreate, but one thing I failed to consider going into it is that shooting in the middle of busy streets isn’t exactly the safest idea! Despite the traffic, we were able to get some shots that were perfect for what they were looking for. I’ve included my favorite at the end of this post!

Jen & Deric | Cambridge engagement

I had such a great time with Jen and Deric for their engagement session a few months ago! We walked all around and through Harvard Square, stopping at some of their favorite spots and bathing in some of the great light as the sun was setting. The sun really played up the colors in the trees and looking back on these images makes me miss fall so much.

We ended the afternoon at 1369 Coffeehouse in nearby Inman Square, where they had their first date and where Deric proposed (so sweet!). I can’t wait to see them again for their wedding in September!

Philomena & Patrick | Harvard Wedding at Adolphus Busch Hall and Garden

Philomena and Patrick kept their wedding small and intimate, which I absolutely loved. They were married at Memorial Church right in Harvard Yard. After this we took a short stroll over to their reception at Harvard’s Germanic museum, Adolphus Busch Hall and Garden. The garden in the back of Adolphus Busch Hall is probably one of the prettiest I’ve seen and such a lovely, hidden spot for cocktails and mingling! The evening transitioned to the hall’s indoor space, with its dramatic architecture and lit sculptures. It’s such a treat photographing in new locations like this, and I hope to shoot there again in the near future!

A couple of behind-the-scenes tidbits–they had one of the sweetest little flower girls who helped escort Philomena all throughout the church and Harvard Yard while we were shooting portraits. She was adorable and took her role so seriously, and this only made her more adorable. Also, Patrick had broken his hand fairly close to the wedding so for much of the wedding day it was in a cast, which you may see in a photo or two below. With the doctor’s permission he was able to remove the cast for the ceremony and for the portraits!

Julie & Jeff | Manchester Bath & Tennis Club Wedding

I loved Julie and Jeff’s wedding at the Manchester Bath & Tennis Club. It was simple yet bursting with personal touches throughout. They held their ceremony along the beach just outside of the tennis club, where they later had their cocktail hour and reception. The ceremony was incredibly intimate, as they called up both sets of parents and included them in the ceremony, acknowledging their love and support. As part of the cocktail hour they had the Dear Abbeys, Boston University’s fantastic a capella group, come serenade them and their guests. Since they played tennis back in college, we made sure to get some action shots of them with their former teammates! On the dinner tables they had wines with personalized labels as well as favors inside Chinese envelopes as an homage to the Julie’s mother’s side of the family. All of this, with the water right nearby and sunset at their fingertips, made for an incredible night!
